European Parliament President Roberta Metsola told MEPs on Wednesday that AI should not be used to write laws and that responsibility for every decision stays with elected members, according to Politico Europe as reported by The Next Web.

Officials are worried about a rise in AI-written amendments, some of which cite laws that do not exist. The reports say Parliament's administration will soon present guidelines built on three ideas: be open about AI use, never put sensitive files into public tools, and check all work before release.

Today MEPs do not have to say when AI helped with an amendment, question or speech, although staff already must label such work. Making the rules binding could need a change to Parliament's rules of procedure. Parliament is also building its own AI platform, EPGenAI Hub, for sensitive work.

Why it matters to you: The people writing EU rules are working out how to use AI honestly themselves. The same simple habits, saying when you used AI and checking what it tells you, are a good guide for anyone using chatbots at work.
