Norwegian court pauses Meta's new terms over use of news for AI
Ten Norwegian media groups have won an emergency order stopping Meta from bringing in business terms they say would let it use their journalism for AI.

Meta announced new commercial terms for business accounts on Facebook and Instagram on 8 October. Norwegian media groups, including the public broadcaster NRK, say the wording could let Meta collect articles, photos and videos, even paywalled ones, to build AI products. The only way to refuse, they say, is to close the account.
On 28 October, a day after the media groups went to court, the Oslo District Court issued a temporary order. According to the industry body that brought the case, Meta cannot apply the changes until the courts have decided whether they are lawful. It is an interim order, not a final verdict, and Meta has not yet commented on the ruling itself, according to PPC Land.
Meta had already moved the start date from 30 October to 20 November. A Meta spokesperson said the current terms stay in place and that the company will not change policy without a full consultation with publishers, which could run past 20 November. European publishers have also asked the European Commission to step in.
