Mistral releases Large 4, a huge open AI model built in Europe
The French company has made the files of its biggest model public, so anyone with enough computing power can run it themselves.

Mistral AI, the Paris-based company, has published the "weights" of Mistral Large 4 on 29 October, according to TechStartups. Weights are the files that make up a trained AI model. Because they are public, companies can download the model and run it on their own servers instead of sending data to someone else's cloud. Mistral first showed Large 4 as a preview on 6 October.
Mistral says the model has about 1 trillion parameters, accepts text and images, and was trained on more than 160 languages, including every official EU language. It is aimed at coding, office tasks and cybersecurity work such as finding software flaws. The test results come from Mistral itself and have not yet been checked independently for the final version.
Running a model this big needs serious computing power, so this is mostly news for businesses and developers, not for a home laptop. Mistral also describes the release as the first step of a plan funded by its €3 billion fundraising round in September.
